Self-Care

Being a college student can be extremely stressful at times (really, most times). That is why it is extremely important to practice self-care. But what is self-care? Self care is caring for and awareness of every aspect of yourself: academics, physical, mental, social, etc. With the stress that Georgetown can bring, we often forget to care for all of these important parts of our selves!

For some people, this care may take the form of fun activities in order to replenish. Other times, this may include making important decisions on how to spend one's time.

Here are some self-care tips and activities by compiled by our peer supporters!

Fun Self-Replenishing Activities

1. Coffee Run
Go with your friends to the nearby Saxby's or Starbuck's on M Street for a nice caramel latte or frappuccino as the winter weather approaches! Nothing like getting off the Georgetown campus to break the Georgetown bubble.

2. Explore The City
You're in DC! There's so much to do! Free shows at the Kennedy Center, Smithsonian museums, movies at AMC, walks through Kalorama, open mics, the moncopuments...

3. Preparing A Meal For Yourself
Face it, we're all tired of Leo's. Invite your friends over and prepare dinner together sometimes.

4. Read A Book (for fun!)
Yes, obviously you have a lot of readings due for Comparative Political Systems but it's still okay to sit down and read something else sometimes!

5. NETFLIX!
If all fails and you jfust want to turn your brain off for a few minutes (or hours), Netflix or other movie services can prove to be helpful in just that.

Self-Care Tips

1. Meditate and reflect
One of our Jesuit ideals is Contemplation in Action, meaning that we should take some time to stop and reflect upon our lives from time to time. For some people, journaling can be helpful. For others, meditations work well. If you need a space to meditate, go to the John Main Center for Meditation and Inter-religious Dialogue at Georgetown University. The mission of the center is "
to encourage the daily personal practice of meditation and to nurture the experience of community that it creates." It's open for private meditation from 7 AM-10PM on Monday-Friday and
from 8 AM-10PM on Saturday and Sunday. It's located in Annie Marie Becraft Hall, which is directly across from the Healy Family Student Center.
2. Delete social media
Social media can be helpful in keeping you connected with your friends and network. However, sometimes it may be a toxic environment. Consider going on a social media cleanse once in a while.

3. Take some time to yourself
Sometimes, self-care is making the hard decision to cut toxic people out of your life. Although you may feel guilt, it is important for you to take care of yourself before you can take care of someone else.

4. Schedule out your day
Georgetown University can be a very intense school. Scheduling out your day can sometimes help you keep your time organized.
